I am discussing a matter that reflects on how we use technology on daily bases. If we are to consider the amount of information that has been made available online we would see that it has grown massive and does raise the flag of how would we be able to distinguished plain useful information from
Jargon or
technical rubbish??
Simple search , but not so simple results
We developers do not worry much about how designers use photoshop or illustrator to create nice tricky images, however, we do seem to care about what is done on the CSS vs HTML front.
Today I decided that I wanted a snippet CSS style to create a quote effect without images. Naturally I did a Google search and got around 3 million results for each of these combinations:
CSS quote no image
blockquote CSS
Create CSS quote
no image blockquote CSS
Among millions of results you would select the first two to three thinking that they would serve the purpose....
THINK AGAIN !! I was surprised to see that most of the examples are using images, some blogs talk about the code but do not give it, most of the pages offer snapshots without an actual example.
So what is the big deal !??
In a world where information is power we need to think about how and what we place out there, when a developer or let's say someone who know exactly what they need they expect to find just that. What I was really looking for was millions of pages where I can see the example of the quote in HTML format (not an images) and either a view source to get the CSS code or click here to download the entire example. However, instead, I found loads of blogs, forums, and pages explaining why the code has been written in that particular format, in addition to an explanation of the power CSS2 has, adding to that all the well known issues with browsers compatibility, and so many comments about different implementation and what is considered good and bad in terms of design. You might say what is wrong with that ? well it is just too much, if I was searching for how to write CSS, or what is CSS2 , or simply looking for a tutorial about CSS and creating quotes, all what I have found is just perfect.
I hope I didn't elaborate to the point where I have mixed good solid info with the technical details of what I have ended up with, my point simply supports the current efforts by the father of the web Sir. Tim Berners-Lee in adapting and formalizing the Web 3.0 in the form of the :
Semantic Web
I believe it would be an answer as it will help us better define the information we publish and make it much easier for search engines like Google to produce results that are as specific as one might need to be helping us all get that piece of information from the stack of Jargon that is on the WEB...
